Save money

Saving energy is going to save you money. In fact, you’ll save £150-£200 for every tonne of CO2 emissions you avoid. And we’ve seen households which can save £600, £700 or more per year, with just a few simple actions.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not the owner – if you pay the bills, you can make the savings. But you will need to talk to your landlord, because many of the actions we recommend will need their agreement.

Many people think: my landlord will never agree to that. But there are many reasons why landlords are now starting to upgrade their properties. They can even claim tax back now, if they invest in making their properties more energy efficient.

Interested in how we calculate the saving? According to the Energy Saving Trust, a Kilowatt hour of electricity generates about 500g of CO2, and a Kilowatt hour of gas about 200g. That means that at today’s prices (around 3p / KWh for gas and 12p / KWh for electricity) each tonne of CO2 you emit costs you about £200. It’s actually a bit less for gas, and a bit more for electricty, but £200 / tonne is a good rule of thumb.
